 POWERHOUSE POETRY

The Powerhouse Poetry Workshop uses a range of teaching techniques, including brainstorming, Mindmapping and hotseating to develop pupils' potential for writing poetry.  In response to a variety of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic stimuli, pupils are encouraged to produce a portfolio of poetry to be proud of.  More importantly, they will be fired with enthusiasm to write more - and equipped with a number of simple strategies to enable them to do so with confidence.

A programme of varied activities (aimed specifically at pupils in Years 5 & 6) encourages pupils to:

• develop an appreciation of rhythm and metre

• explore the use of rhyme

• devise and employ simile and metaphor

• consider the use of alliteration and onomatopoeia

After listening to selected poems, pupils will be guided to write their own poetry; review and assess their own poems and those of their peers; then perform their poetry to an audience of their peers (and perhaps to an invited audience of parents?)  By negotiation, the workshop can also include production of an illustrated booklet to showcase pupils' completed poetry.
