Obliques

 

The oblique stroke is not normally used as a punctuation mark in a piece of writing.  However, it does have a number of uses.

 

Obliques are used in certain ABBREVIATIONS.

a/c = account

Obliques can be used to separate items in a list.

 

The District Line to Earl's Court passes through: Wimbledon / Wimbledon Park / Southfields / East Putney / Putney Bridge / Parson's Green / Fulham Broadway / West Brompton.

 

Obliques can be used to separate alternative items.

 

1 teaspoonful of fresh grated ginger / ginger paste.

 

The oblique has become an essential element of website addresses (URLs) - where it is referred to as a "forward slash".
