Why use group-work?

Introduces variety into the programme.

Allows for a "change of pace" in the learning activity - which helps students re-focus their attention.

Encourages participation: those reluctant to contribute to whole class discussion may open up more easily in a smaller group - especially if self-chosen.

Enables sharing of experience - leading to wider dissemination of individual insight.

Enables sharing of expertise - fostering a co-operative learning ethos.

Encourages interaction - allowing class members to identify others with similar (or complementary) interests, needs and learning styles.

Task-oriented group-work helps to develop problem-solving ability.

Helps to break down any barriers between tutor and students.

Provides opportunity for the tutor to identify different personalities and learning styles.

Provides time for the tutor to set up other activities.
