Light re-leaf

Does the colour of light affect plant growth?

PLAN

Over several weeks (or longer) grow a number of plants in identical conditions - except the colour of the light they receive.

Record the progress of the plants.

What colours of light will you use?

How will you change the colour of light for each plant?

Where will you keep the plants?

How often will you water them?

I WILL NEED

Several young plants of same variety

OR

Plant pots, potting compost, seeds, water trays, etc.

I MAY NEED

Several large boxes.

Coloured gels / light filters.

FAIR TEST

How will you ensure that this is a "fair test"?

PREDICTION

What do you already know about plants that are kept in the dark?

What do you think might happen to plants in different coloured light?

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

Describe the equipment you used and how you made it.

What was the purpose of this equipment?

What did you observe?

Did you encounter any problems?

What did you do to overcome these?

COLLECT

DATA

You will need to record the height, colour and physical appearance of each plant.

How often will you collect data?

You could take photographs.

ANALYSE

DATA

Are there any differences in plant height or shape?

What about the colour of the plant stem and leaves?

PRESENT

FINDING

A diagram would help to explain the equipment you designed.

A written account would be useful to explain what you did.

Photographs of the plants at various stages might be interesting.

What is the best way to present your data?  A bar chart?

EVALUATE

INVESTIGATION

If you were going to do this investigation again, would you make any changes to your equipment?
