The Magic Quilt

PART 6

As the magic quilt landed rather bumpily in Sam's back garden, Sam and Lee could hear Lee's Mum calling out from her kitchen door.  Sam and Lee jumped up, rolled up the quilt and hid it quickly in Sam's Dad's garden shed.

Lee The quilt was right.  My Mum is starting to wonder where I am.
Sam Don't tell anybody about what we did today!
Lee But my Mum is sure to ask.
Sam I don't think my Mum cares what I do - as long as the neighbours don't complain.  Just say we were looking at my book - the one about France.
Lee Alright.  If we told them the truth, they wouldn't believe us anyway.
Sam Let's go somewhere else tomorrow!  Come round as soon as you've had breakfast.
  Lee O.K.  See you tomorrow.

Lee's Mum and Dad were sitting at the kitchen table when Lee went in.  Lee's little sister was chasing some baked beans round a bowl.  There were more than a few baked beans scattered on the floor and spread around the table.  Lee sat down and tried to look "normal".  Even so, Lee couldn't help but look a bit shocked when Mum and Dad started talking about the main item on the evening news.  Lee could hardly believe it and couldn't wait to tell Sam.

Next morning, Lee was up bright and early.  Earlier than on a school-day!  Lee gobbled down some breakfast as fast as possible, gulped a mug of milk and was soon racing round to Sam's garden.  Lee wondered whether Sam would be awake so early - but need not have worried.  Sam was sitting in the doorway of the shed scribbling notes on a pad.

Lee You'll never guess what was on the news last night!
Sam Err ... give me a clue.
  Lee We were!
  Sam

What?!

Lee My Mum and Dad were talking about it when I got in.  There was a UFO in Paris yesterday, flying around near the Eiffel Tower!
Sam Was there?  Well, that's where we were and I didn't see it.
Lee Of course you did!  It was us!
Sam But we haven't got a UF... Oh!  I see what you mean.  The quilt!
Lee Yes!  Someone must have seen us and didn't know what it was.  My Dad said the French police called out the French Army and the French Air Force.
Sam It's a good job they didn't catch us.  We could have been in serious trouble.  We'll have to be really careful where we go next time.
Lee I know.  I've been thinking hard all night and I've got an idea - but I need to check something first.
  Sam What?
  Lee Get the quilt out.
Sam Here you are.  I've unrolled it for you.
Lee Can you find that patch that told us what the quilt could do.  It was one of the first ones that jiggled.
Sam It could be that one - or that one - or that one - I think they were the first ones.
Lee Right.  Look for the bit that says where the quilt can go.

Lee There!  That's the bit!  "I'll whisk you off through space and time."
Sam Don't you think it's a bit dangerous going off into space?
Lee No ... the other bit.  Space AND TIME.  It means the quilt can take us back in time.  If we go back in time then our parents won't hear about us on the news.
Sam They might not hear about us at all.  What if we get stuck in the past?
Lee Wait a minute.  Let me find that other patch.  Read that!

Sam So you reckon the quilt will keep us safe?
Lee That's what it says.  It even made sure we got home from France before our Mums started to worry about us.
Sam Right.  Let's go back in time.  Any ideas?
Lee Well, I was thinking about it last night before I fell asleep.  I think that glass pyramid gave me the idea.  Ancient Egypt.
Sam Of course!  We've studied it in school so we should know enough to keep the quilt flying.
Lee We might have to look up a few things first
Sam OK.  Do you think your Dad would let us use his computer?
Lee If you ask him, I think he would.  Let's go and find out.
Lee's Dad was a bit surprised when the two of them said that they wanted to use his computer to find out about Ancient Egypt - but he couldn't really say "No".  After all, he was always telling Lee how important it was to do well at school.  So, Sam and Lee found themselves perched in front of the computer in Lee's back room, trying to discover as much as they could.  They soon found a really useful website that connected them to lots of other interesting websites - and they started to make notes that would help them keep the quilt flying.

Sam Well, I think we've found out enough to get us to Egypt.
Lee But have we found out enough to take us back thousands of years?
Sam There's only one way to find out.  Let's write a rhyme!
Lee Oh no!  What rhymes with Egypt?
Sam Dipped.  Dripped.  Flipped.  Slipped.  Tripped.  There are loads of words!
  Lee O.K.  Let's get started.
Sam and Lee were really quite excited about all the things they had found out about Ancient Egypt, and they were buzzing with ideas for their rhyme.  Sam, who was not usually very keen on writing, had lots of ideas for rhymes they could use - and Lee could hardly write them down quickly enough.  Within minutes, the two of them sat back, breathless.
Sam That is just brilliant.  If that doesn't get the quilt jiggling then nothing will.  Read it to me.
  Lee

As I was travelling to Egypt,

I saw someone who tripped.

She fell into the River Nile

And landed on a crocodile.

In a pyramid I saw a tomb -

Suddenly, there was a loud BOOM!

As I looked across the dark room,

There I saw Tutankhamun.

There lies a mummy who was dead,

Covered in bandages from foot to head.

The organs were stored in canopic jars

And unfortunately they got sold to lots of bars.

This poem was written by Ms Middleton and her Year 3 class at Maybury Primary School, Hull.
Sam Right!  Let's read it to the quilt and get going!
Lee No!  Wait a minute.  I've just had a thought.
  Sam What do you mean?
Lee Well, if we are going back to Ancient Egypt, we might get a chance to look inside a tomb.
Sam I hope so.  That would be great!
Lee So, maybe we should take a few things with us ... like a torch, for instance.
Sam That's a good idea!  Go and collect whatever you think will be useful.  Don't be too long, though.  I want to spend as much time in Egypt as I can.
Lee I'll be a couple of minutes.  Don't go without me!

THINK ABOUT IT

If you were Lee, what would you take with you?

Remember, your items should be easy to get hold of

(you have only got a few minutes);

small and light enough to carry;

useful in some way.
