No matter how Alex, Lee and Sam decide to spend their money, they always end up with 32 squares of chocolate.  So, what is the best way to share it?

The friends raised 96 to buy 32 squares of chocolate.

So, each of them should get one square of chocolate for every 3 contributed.

You could draw up a table to show how much each of them paid.

  Name Amount paid calculation Squares

Lee

26 26/3=about 9 9

Alex

30 30/3=10 10

Sam

40 40/3=about 13 13

TOTAL

96 96/3=32 32

The table also shows the number of squares each friend receives.

Although the friends raised 96, they only needed to spend 88 - so they still had some money left over (8).  What to do with it?  The friends were all feeling so pleased with themselves that they decided to give it to a local children's charity.  It was far easier than trying to decide who should get how much!
