Miss Dexter had just started to demonstrate a science experiment to the class when she suddenly realised that there was something else she needed.  "Danny and Mark," she instructed, "I need exactly 500cc of water.  That cylindrical jug holds exactly one litre when filled to the brim.  Go and fetch me some water ... and make sure you bring me exactly half a jugful."

 

It was only when Danny and Mark were standing at the water tap that they realised there were no markings on the jug.  How could they tell where halfway would be?  "I'll go and get something to measure with," said Danny.  "No need," explained Mark, "I know how to do it - without using any kind of measure."
