Lee, Alex and Sam stood outside the sweetshop, gazing at the display for the new chocolate bar, "Cracklejack". According to the TV adverts, "it explodes into flavour in your mouth!" After a hasty consultation, they ran home to see how much money they could raise. When they came back, Lee had 26, Alex had 30 and Sam had 40.
"I can afford a small bar," said Lee. "Me too!" said Alex. "And I could buy a medium bar," agreed Sam, "And if we put together the money that's left over, we could probably afford another bar."
However, when they worked it out, they realised that Sam's idea would not work.
"Even so," explained Lee, "If we put our money together at the start, I'm sure we could all get more chocolate." So the friends agreed to put their money together.
What's the most chocolate they could buy this way?
How many pieces of chocolate would there be to share?
What's the best way to share the chocolate, bearing in mind that they each paid different amounts of money?
