BrainBites - What's-it-do? | ||||

|

|
EQUIPMENT
Chalkboard or whiteboard or flipchart Paper and pencil for each student.
|
DESCRIPTION
The teacher introduces the exercise.
Inventions are often given names made up from bits of other words. EXAMPLE: Tele-phone is made up of tele (Greek for far) and phone (Greek for sound) EXAMPLE = Surf-board is made up of surf (to do with waves) and board (a piece of wood)
The teacher writes on the board 3 (made-up) names of "new inventions".
Working in groups of 3 or 4, students have to choose one of the names and, by breaking the name into bits, decide what the invention does.
Students could also discuss how the invention might work and what it might look like.
After a suitable length of time (4 - 5 minutes) the teacher invites suggestions for inventions.
All suggestions should be welcomed positively.
A reward could be given for the most sensible suggestion - or for the craziest.
