DESCRIPTION

After explaining the activity, the teacher gives notice of a topic or theme (e.g.: numbers, animals, names, something you eat, words beginning with a specific letter, etc.)

  • All students stand.

  • One by one, the teacher points to each student.

  • Each student has to say a word that fits with the theme - without repeating any previous suggestions.

  • If the suggestion is a valid suggestion, all other students clap twice and the student making the suggestion sits down.

  • If the suggestion does not fit with the theme or has already been suggested by a previous student, all other students silently wave their hands in the air, the student remains standing and makes another suggestion.  (The teacher may point to another student and returning to this student soon afterwards).

  • The activity continues until all students are seated.

  • An element of competition is introduced if the activity is timed - and the current "best time" becomes a target on subsequent occasions.

NOTE: The teacher should use discretion in the order in which students are selected.  All students should be able to make valid suggestions early in the activity - whereas more able students are more likely to respond to the challenge posed by a reducing pool of options as the activity progresses.

BEFORE

AFTER

The words suggested could be recorded or written down (perhaps by a classroom assistant) to form the basis of a subsequent piece of work.

The activity can be used to generate words and ideas for a piece of written English - or could be used to revise a recent topic.
