EQUIPMENT

Various items that "make a noise" (e.g.: bunch of keys, coins, pencil sharpener, musical instruments, pack of playing cards, stapler.)

Something to act as a screen.

Paper and pencil for each student.

DESCRIPTION

Students work individually.

This is an exercise in active listening.

The teacher sets up a small screen.  Behind the screen, the teacher uses various items that make a distinctive noise.  Pupils write down what item they think is being used to make the noise.  Alongside the name of the item they also write a word that describes the noise.  (Pupils may wish to invent an onomatopoeic word.)

At the end of the listening time, students are encouraged to talk as a group about the sounds they heard and what might have made those sounds.

BEFORE

None

AFTER

Students should be encouraged to think of imaginative ways of describing the sounds they hear.  Do keys always clink?  Don't they also clunk or plonk?
