EQUIPMENT

(Optional) paper and pencil for each student

DESCRIPTION

Students can work individually or in small groups of 2, 3 or 4.

The teacher selects a number of key words.  3 or 4 is plenty to start with - although students quickly become proficient at handling more and more words.

(The key words can be chosen at random - or brainstormed by students.  Alternatively, they can be related to a recent study topic - or something that the students need to remember.)

The teacher suggests a well-known tune (or several tunes - to provide options) - or gets the class to suggest some (Eg:  “Old McDonald” - “Oh my darling Clementine” - “Yellow Submarine” etc.)

Students have to make up a short song which includes as many of the key words as possible - and which preferably makes some kind of sense.

It is not essential that the song is written down - as long as students can remember and “perform” it.

Depending on time available, willing students should be encouraged to perform their songs.

Praise (and rewards?) for originality.

BEFORE

It is essential to choose songs with which students are familiar.

AFTER

Students should be encouraged to use this technique to help them remember important key-words related to curriculum topics.
