OHP Prepared card shapes (see below)
|
DESCRIPTION
The teacher selects a student to start the activity. The student is given the set of shapes and told an object.
With the OHP switched off, the student arranges whichever of the shapes they choose to form the silhouette of the specified object. Students may use as many of the shapes as they wish and the shapes may overlap.
During this phase, which may take a minute or two, the rest of the class could continue working as normal or be involved in a different BrainBites activity.
When the student has finished (or at the end of a set amount of time) the OHP is switched on to reveal the silhouette and the rest of the class guess what it is meant to represent.
A variation on the exercise is for a number of students (or everybody in the class) to prepare (and glue?) their silhouettes in advance (which requires multiple sets of shapes) - then to display them in quick sequence - with students writing down their guesses - to be checked later.

BEFORE
Prior to this activity, it is necessary to prepare a set of cut-out shapes (click to open pdf file)

|
AFTER
Initially, the objects specified should be quite simple (e.g. "cat", "dog", "house") but can become increasingly more difficult and sophisticated (e.g. "owl", "parrot", "Egyptian mummy") as students become more adept at the activity.
