DESCRIPTION

This can be a noisy activity - so you may wish to pre-warn other teachers.

Students may sit or stand for this activity.

Students are asked to identify which hand they usually write with.  This is their dominant hand.  For this activity they will be using their other (non-dominant) hand.

  • All together, students say “A” and thrust their thumb in the air.

  • All together, students say “E” and thrust their index finger in the air.

  • All together, students say “I” and thrust their middle finger in the air.

  • All together, students say “O” and thrust their fourth finger in the air. (Quite difficult, this one)

  • All together, students say “U” and thrust their little finger in the air.

Repeat this several times until students are confident.

The teacher now calls out random vowels - with students repeating these aloud whilst thrusting appropriate fingers skyward.

BEFORE

It is helpful if students know the vowels, but not essential.

The following BrainBites activities build on this exercise:

"Vowel-spotter"
