DESCRIPTION

Students stand for this activity and will need a reasonable amount of space.

All students start by facing the front of the classroom.

The teacher directs the students (in Sergeant-Major fashion) to turn to the left or to the right a certain number of turns (each turn equating to a right angle = 90 degrees).  The formula for each instruction is:

“TO THE LEFT - ONE TURN”

or

“TO THE RIGHT - TWO TURNS”

Most students can cope with up to 4 turns (ie: bringing them full circle.)

The teacher can ascertain whether students are complying appropriately because they should all be facing in the same direction (but do not assume that the majority are necessarily correct!)

The teacher could keep count of how many instructions students were able to follow before chaos broke out.

BEFORE

Ensure that students know LEFT and RIGHT.

AFTER

Instead of indicating a number of “turns” the teacher could instruct students to turn through 90, 180, 270 or 360 degrees.

It may even be possible to include 45 degrees (and its multiples)!
