EQUIPMENT
Paper (A4 or A5) for each student. Coloured pencils or felt-tip pens.
|
DESCRIPTION
Students work in groups of 3.
Each student needs a piece of paper, which is folded into 3 approximately equal sections. Two small marks are made on each of the fold-lines, dividing them into 3 approximately equal parts. (These sheets could be photocopied in advance.)
Working on their own sheet of paper, each student draws the head of an animal in the left-hand section of their piece of paper, using the marks as "shoulders".
Students fold the paper so that their drawing is out of sight and pass their sheet to the person on their right. This student draws the body of an animal (including its legs) in the centre section between the mark provided.
Students again fold the paper and pass it to the right. This third student draws the "tail end" of an animal using the marks provided as a guide.
Sheets are unfolded. Working in groups, students invent names for the mythical animals they have drawn.

AFTER
The mythical animals created could be coloured in and displayed in a "Crazy Zoo".
The animals could provide the starting point for a story.
"Invent-a-name" is another BrainBites activity that encourages students to invent names for things. This could lead to an investigation of how things get their names and word-roots. See "Roots".
