EQUIPMENT

Optional chalkboard or flipchart or IWB

Pencil & paper for each student.

DESCRIPTION

This is a variation on a game that has appeared in a number of newspapers (in various guises) and has been used to fill many a "wet playtime".

The teacher writes on the board (or simply tells the students) the mixed-up letter of a word.

Students work in small teams of 3 or 4.  The challenge is to re-arrange the letters to form the original word.

Some students may find it helpful to write the letters on bits of paper and physically re-arrange these on the desk-top.

When a team discovers a word, a representative goes to show the teacher secretly - and is rewarded with the next mixed-up word from the list.

If a team discovers a different word than the original word - but which uses all the letters provided and is correctly spelled - this should be counted as correct (and may even attract a special reward).

The activity continues for a set amount of time or until all the words on the list have been discovered.

BEFORE

Prepare a list of "mixed up" words.  Ensure that the words are within the students' vocabulary.

AFTER

BrainBites activities "Word-builder" and "Word-builder Special" are both similar to this one.
