EQUIPMENT

Chalkboard OR wipeboard OR  flipchart OR IWB.

Pencil and paper for each team.

Erasers (optional).

Although students can work individually at this activity, it is most useful when students are organised into teams of 3 or 4.

The teacher writes a word vertically down the left hand side of the board (if possible, avoiding words containing the letters Q, X, Z).

Student-teams are challenged to write a sentence in which each word begins with the letters of the given word.

Successful teams are encouraged to share their ideas. There could be a reward for the team with the silliest suggestion.  (If the aim of the exercise is to learn a difficult spelling, this could then be rehearsed by the whole class.)

Best (KS2) example I have encountered - PHOTOSYNTHESIS = Pete's Horse Owns Two Origami Shops Yet No-one Thinks His Elephant Shop Is Sensible.

BEFORE

The teacher chooses a number of words (word-length 6-9 letters for KS2) - perhaps those on this week's spelling target-list.

AFTER

This is a useful exercise which students will be able to apply to help develop enhanced memory skills.  The mnemonic memory method is a popular one with "linguistic learners".  Students can also use this method to help them learn difficult spellings.
